Historical Facts
Francis M. Dunnington House, 1914 McLaughlin and Stanhope-Johnson – Colonial Revival. 2 ½-story, 3-bay, hip-roofed brick house with tile roof and overhanging eaves. Round-arched dormers, 1-story porch with fluted columns and brick piers. Secondary building: 1-story brick garage with tile roof, same style as house.
Frances Mallory Dunnington was born in 1874 in Lynchburg, VA. He commissioned the House in 1914 and died in 1939. Married to Frances Archer Bendall born in 1881, died 1972. Daughter Frances Bendall Dunnington was the only daughter 1915-1994. In 19xx, the house was sold to First Presbyterian Church to be used as the church parsonage from 1942-1965 (Dr. Russell C. Stroup 1942-1950, Rev. Dr. Emmett B. McGukin 1950-1965). The church sold it to Duvall Martin 1942-65, who was a judge, and his wife Maude, who was the head nurse at Virginia Baptist Hospital. They had painted the woodwork in the basement green and red for Christmas parties. The owners after that, James & Paulette Gertrude 1965-87, divided the house into apartments. Two sisters lived in the upstairs in apartments for sixteen years. Manfields let the sisters remain upstairs and have very fond memories of Helen Brown who was an English and Latin teacher. She would go to Atlantic City during the summers and was a fortune teller. It all begins with an idea. Maybe you want to launch a business. Maybe you want to turn a hobby into something more. Or maybe you have a creative project to share with the world. Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.
